Dressage for Beginners
The IDS Education Committee in their ongoing desire to provide club members with interesting and helpful educational material, has come across a number of “old” magazines that pre-dated the United States Dressage Federation. The publications may be old, but the information is as timely as ever.
One of these older publications is “Dressage” magazine, created and dedicated exclusively to the art of Dressage. For 25 years, the editor of the magazine (and also founder) was Ivan Bezugloff Jr. Bezugloff, a Czech born amateur dressage rider, had strong beliefs that Dressage in the U.S. lacked a vehicle to communicate classical training techniques as well as current news about clinics and competitions. After selling his printing business in 1971, he began publishing the periodical known as “Dressage”, which eventually became “Dressage and CT”. Bezugloff’s magazine published many in-depth articles written by some of the most highly respected Dressage trainers and judges in the US and Europe. In addition to his passion for providing excellent education to U.S. dressage enthusiasts, Bezugloff was one of the original founders of the United States Dressage Federation.
We will be curating articles from “Dressage” and placing them on the IDS web site on a regular basis, giving full credit to each author as well as Ivan Bezugloff. We hope you enjoy these articles, and we ask that you provide feedback to help the Education Committee in their search and selection of topics that you find important.
Our first article was authored by Kay Meredith and is one of a series she wrote entitled: “Dressage for Beginners”. Ms. Meredith is an American equestrian and novelist, currently living in Raleigh, North Carolina. She represented the United States at numerous international Dressage competitions and became National Grand Prix Champion in 1982. In 1979 she was named the American Horse Show Association “Horsewoman of the Year”. As a founding member of the United States Dressage Federation, she served as the second USDF Vice President before she served as the President from 1977 to 1982. In 2004 the Roemer Foundation placed Kay Meredith into the USDF Hall of Fame by honoring her with their prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
Here’s to celebrating the best of Dressage!
